In mid-August this year, good news came from Nanjing Jiashu, the first center in Jiangsu Province authorized by Confucius Institute Headquarters (Hanban) . Six teachers from TCFL(Teaching Chinese as a Foreign Language)Teaching and Research Section of CZIIT(Changzhou Institute of Industry Technology), namely Zhou Li, Liu Hui, Tu Yanqun, Yan Huayun, Xiong Wei and Su Zhouyuan, all gained their Certificate for Teachers of Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages.
The TCFL Certificate Test, sponsored by Confucius Institute Headquarters (Hanban), is the only official and most authoritative international Chinese teacher’s proficiency test. It covers five aspects: the basis of teaching Chinese as a foreign language, teaching methods, teaching organization and management, Chinese culture and cross-cultural communication, professional ethics and professional development. The proficiency test is divided into two parts: written test and interview. The full score is 150, and an examinee can’t obtain Certificate for Teachers of Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages until he or she passes all subjects.
The six teachers passed the written examination in April and thus got the qualification to apply for the interview in July. With CZIIT leaders’ strong encouragement and support, they actively participated in training in their spare time, discussed and reviewed carefully, and their solid basic language teaching skills, good foreign language skills and well-trained psychological adaptability led to a rewarding pass rate, which is more than 60 percentage points higher than the average rate. What is particularly worth mentioning is that Ms Zhou Li’s score 127 ranks the second uncommonly among all the examinees of the Jiangsu provincial examination center.
After obtaining the Certificate for Teachers of Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages, the teachers in the TCFL Teaching and Research Section of CZIIT will become more confident and contribute better to its internationalization upgrading project.
