On the morning of July 13, 14 international students from Liberia, Tanzania, Yemen, Ghana, Rwanda, Ethiopia, Congo, Bangladesh and 18 domestic volunteers from Xinyuan Seed Society of Changzhou Institute of Industry Technology walked into the Jinghui Care-and-Attention Center of Wujin District to visit the elderly.
Though it was a scorching summer day, it did not affect everyone’s enthusiasm. After arriving at the nursing home, more than 40 elderly people mixed up with the members of Xinyuan seed society to make dumplings. Both guests and hosts enjoyed the art shows while eating dumplings. The programs included stories, songs, martial arts performances, comic dialogue and magic cube performances. The scene was joyful.
During the interaction, the international students taught the elderly English, and the elderly taught them a little Changzhou dialect in return. A female international student named Gao Ge exclaimed: “Grandpa and grandma live happily!” The senior citizens said to her, “The Party’s policies are good, do you know? General Secretary Xi said: ‘We are committed to providing for the aged, backing for the aged, entertaining for the aged, and comforting the aged.’ You made the right choice to study in China.”
Xinyuan Seed Society launched this activity to let international students in CZIIT have access to the community, practice oral Chinese, and have a deeper understanding of Changzhou’s local customs and practices.
